Another One Bites the Dust

It's a little after seven in the evening.  It's a beautiful late August evening.  A little on the cool side, as it has been all summer, really.  The sun is sinking towards the gym across the street and the sky, which was golden a half hour ago, is now turning peach and blue.

In a little more than twelve hours it will be beautiful and warm and just like this morning but it will be completely different for tomorrow morning school starts again.  Summer of 09 will be over.  It doesn't matter that the next two months will probably feature the best and perhaps even warmest weather of the year.  Once again we will be constrained by the hours of the clock and the days of the week.  One of my favorite things about summer is losing track of the days.  "What day is it?"  "I don't know.  Did we go to church yesterday or the day before?"

The pools actually closed last Wednesday.  How sucky is that?  Not enough that the summer has slipped away, no we have to deny you all the last five days which could have been spent blissfully soaking up the sun!  Doesn't matter that the weather was so cool that the pool was never where I wanted to be.  That's not the point!

Labor day isn't until next week and they closed the pools last week!  That's twelve days before the end of summer and they closed the pools.  This is why so many of us distrust the government.  They can't even get summer right.

Speaking of which, why are we starting tomorrow?  I thought we weren't supposed to start until after labor day?  The fair just got started and the kids in town are in school.  In what way does that make sense?  Of course it doesn't.

This was a really fun summer even if the weather was cool and gray.  Starting with our trip in May to Coronado, CA it's been fun, fun, fun all summer long.  The fourth of July was barely two months ago, but measuring by the parties, concerts and visitors, it was about two years ago in fun years.  I think if I average it out and include the impromptus as well as the birthday parties, farewell parties, family reunions and out of town visitors, we had about three parties a week.  July was flat out exhausting.  August was more serene but the weather finally acted; sunny but cool through the days and enough rain at night to bring the dead grass back from the grave.

The sun is getting bigger and bloodier as it sinks to the horizon, where it'll land a good five degrees south of (and two hours earlier than)  where it landed in late June.

Some time in the middle of tomorrow afternoon, it'll be warm and gorgeous outside and I'll feel like it's still summer and then I'll remember that Josie isn't at Meg's house or at the lake; she's at school.

I'll remember and I'll be sad that summer is over.
