Saw Dreamgirls the day after it opened.
LOVED IT!!
I was unfamiliar with the music and knew just what little bit about the plot that everyone knows; its based loosely on the Supremes, the fat chick gets bounced for the pretty one and they become superstars.
Beyonce was ridiculously beautiful. She sings well. Jamie Foxx didn't seem to have any idea of what his character was. Didn't matter.
Eddie Murphy was fabulous. In the first hour, he was fun, over the top, Eddie Murphy. In the second hour, he made me forget he was Eddie Murphy, he broke my heart and for at least one number he stole the show.
Jennifer Hudson is a superstar. She's no more than cute and she's never been in a movie before and from the second she appears on screen, she dares you to look at someone else and you just can't. Beyonce is glittering like a diamond next to her and you're like "Get outta the way, girl, Fattie's gonna SANG!!" I cried when she got demoted to second string. I said for a number, Eddie steals the show, but no one's stealing anything from that girl. She took this movie by the throat and never let go for an instant. While watching, I thought the middle section was a tad long and looking back, I realize that's the part of the movie Effie's not in. It wasn't too long at all, it was just Jenniferless and therefore less.
Carrie Underwood may have the best selling debut album for an American Idol winner and Miss Hudson didn't even make the finals, but she is a bona fide MOVIE STAR and that's the top of the idol heap here in America.
