Granite

We are heading into the last few days of what has been the most spectacular June I can recall since 1980. Now, that was a good June. It was eighty degrees and sunny every day and it rained between midnight and five a.m. every night. That's how I remember it.
June in Minnesota has been sticky, wet and wild for the last seventeen years. When we first moved back here, in 1990, the summers were so lame, so cool and overcast that my kids didn't believe me when I told them that growing up, we'd actually had hot, sunny summers. But you know what? Weather goes in cycles. I know that will come as a shock to some of the global warming hysterics out there, but even a generation of weather doesn't amount to more than a phase.
This year, the weather has been nice, sunny and warm since we got home from Florida in mid May. We've had some rainy days, but never too many in a row. We've had some hot, muggy days too, but we've only had to turn on our central air a few times. I just love this.
We finally decided on our new counters. Jay's been doing homework on all sorts of synthetic surfaces, getting estimates and bringing home lots of samples. The other day, he stopped into a granite shop on Chicago that we both thought only did tombstones. Turns out they've been doing counters for a couple of years, too. I have to say, as beautiful as the synthetics are, the real deal is just that much more gorgeous. I know granite has to be sealed every year, so there's a little maintenaince involved, but I don't care. We picked one called "Verde Candeis" and it works really well in our kitchen. It goes with all the colors and it's not too dark, like some (most) of the greens were. We looked at some blacks and greys but we all liked the midtone green the best. It's a very muted green and looks fab with the wall color we have now. I'm happy about it.
So happy, in fact, that I've decided it's time to rehang the art work that hasn't been on the living room walls since I painted them orange.
Give me the hammer! Time to pound some nails!
